Whole House Water Filter Installation: What to Expect From Start to Finish
A standard whole-house water filter installation takes 2 to 3 hours in most Melbourne homes. Your water is typically off for around 60 to 90 minutes during the actual plumbing work, and you will have filtered water flowing from every tap before the plumber leaves.
If you want to know exactly what happens during those 2 to 3 hours, so there are zero surprises on the day, this guide walks through our complete installation process from the initial assessment right through to final testing.
We will also cover what can make an installation take longer, why renovations are the ideal time to install, and what is included in our fully installed price of $1,100, including GST.
What Happens During a Whole House Water Filter Installation?
Every whole-house water filter installation we do follows the same structured 3-step process. No surprises, no hidden steps, and nothing that has not been explained to you before we start.
Step 1: Assessment and Planning (15 to 20 Minutes)
Before any tools are brought out, your plumber assesses your property to determine the best installation approach. This step covers:
- Locating your main water line entry point. This is where the system connects, so every drop of water entering your home passes through it before reaching any tap or appliance.
- Checking the plumbing material and condition. Whether your home has copper, PEX, or galvanised pipes determines the required fittings and connection method.
- Choosing the mounting location. The HP3 system is wall-mounted in a 304 stainless steel bracket. The plumber selects a spot near the main water entry that is accessible for future filter replacements, protected from direct weather, and structurally sound.
- Confirming water meter and isolation valve access. The water supply needs to be shut off during installation, so the meter and main valve must be reachable.
- Walking you through the plan. Before any work starts, your plumber explains exactly what they are going to do, how long it will take, and confirms the agreed price. No work begins without your go-ahead.
In most Melbourne homes, the main water line enters at the front boundary (in a meter box) or at the side of the house near the garage or laundry. The filter installs after the water meter, but before any internal plumbing, so every outlet in the home receives filtered water.
Step 2: Installation (60 to 90 Minutes)
This is the hands-on phase. Here is what happens, in order:
- Water supply is shut off at the main isolation valve or meter. Your plumber gives you advance notice so you can fill a kettle or water bottles before the shutdown.
- The main water line is cut at the chosen installation point. The HP3 system has 1-inch BSP threaded ports that connect to your existing pipework with fittings matched to your pipe type.
- The stainless steel bracket is mounted to the wall. The HP3’s 304 brushed stainless steel housing is designed for Australian conditions. It will not corrode or degrade outdoors, unlike plastic housings that can become brittle under UV exposure.
- Isolation valves are fitted on both the inlet and outlet sides of the system. These let you isolate the filter for cartridge changes without shutting off water to the entire house. A simple but important detail that makes ongoing maintenance much easier.
- The three filter cartridges are installed: Stage 1 (5 micron sediment pre-filter), Stage 2 (10 micron activated carbon block), and Stage 3 (0.5 micron composite carbon block). Each cartridge is checked and seated correctly to prevent water bypass. For a full breakdown of what each stage removes, see: What Does a Whole House Water Filter Remove?
- All connections are sealed and pressure-tested using thread tape only (never sealant, which can crack filter housings over time). Every joint is checked for leaks before restoring the water supply.
- Water supply is restored, and the system is flushed for several minutes to clear carbon fines from the new cartridges. The first few minutes of water may look slightly grey. This is completely normal and clears quickly.
During this phase, your water is off. In a standard installation, this is typically 60 to 90 minutes. We recommend filling a kettle and a couple of water bottles before the plumber starts, so you have drinking water available during the downtime.
Step 3: Testing and Handover (15 to 20 Minutes)
Once the system is installed and water is flowing, your plumber runs a complete check:
- Every tap in your home is tested for flow and pressure to confirm the system is not restricting water delivery anywhere in the house
- All connection points are inspected under full pressure for leaks
- You are shown how the system works: how the three stages function, when to replace cartridges (every 12 to 18 months), and how to use the isolation valves for future DIY cartridge swaps
- The filter replacement schedule is discussed. All three cartridges cost approximately $350 per set, and the swap takes 15 to 20 minutes without a plumber
- You taste the water. The difference from the kitchen tap is usually noticeable immediately, especially if you are used to the chlorine taste of unfiltered Melbourne water
We do not leave until the system is confirmed to be working correctly and you are comfortable with how it operates. Total time from arrival to handover: typically 2 to 3 hours

Installation Timeline at a Glance
Phase | Typical Duration | Water Supply Status |
Step 1: Assessment and Planning | 15 to 20 minutes | Water ON (no disruption) |
Step 2: Installation | 60 to 90 minutes | Water OFF during this phase |
Step 3: Testing and Handover | 15 to 20 minutes | Water ON (system running) |
Total (Standard Installation) | 2 to 3 hours | Water off for ~60 to 90 minutes of the total |
What Can Make an Installation Take Longer?
Most Melbourne installations fall within the 2 to 3 hour window. However, there are situations where additional work is needed:
Situation | What Happens / Additional Time |
Main water line in a difficult location | If the mains entry is behind concrete, inside a wall cavity, or in a cramped space, additional plumbing work may be needed to bring the connection to a suitable mounting point. Can add 30 to 60 minutes. |
Older plumbing needs upgrading | Homes with ageing galvanised steel pipes or corroded fittings near the main entry may need pipe sections replaced for a secure, leak-free connection. Common in pre-1980s suburbs like Coburg, Essendon, Preston, and Footscray. |
Both whole house + under sink RO being installed | Installing both an HP3 and a reverse osmosis system in one visit takes 3 to 4 hours total. More efficient than two separate visits. Combined installed price from $2,200. |
Relocating the water entry point | Occasionally, the main line location does not allow for practical filter mounting. The plumber may need to extend or reroute a section of pipe, adding 30 to 90 minutes. |
Part of a renovation or new build | Installation during a renovation is usually faster and cheaper because the plumbing is already exposed and being worked on. The filter integrates into the plumbing plan with minimal additional effort. This is the ideal time to install. |
Any additional work is discussed and priced before it happens. We do not start extra work without your approval, and the price you are quoted is the price you pay.
Why Renovations Are the Best Time to Install
If you are planning a kitchen renovation, bathroom upgrade, or building a new home, this is the ideal time to add a whole-house water filter.
Here is why renovation timing works in your favour:
- Plumbing is already being worked on. Your plumber is already on-site, cutting, connecting, and testing pipes. Adding a water filter to the scope of work takes minimal extra time and avoids a separate call-out fee.
- Walls and access points are likely open. In a renovation, the plumber typically has better access to the main water line without needing to work around finished surfaces.
- It is cheaper as part of existing work. A standalone installation requires its own site visit, water shutdown, and labour charge. During a renovation, these costs are largely absorbed into the existing plumbing budget.
- You get filtered water from day one. Rather than moving into a renovated home and scheduling a separate installation later, the system is ready when you are.
If you are working with a builder or plumber on a renovation, mention that you want a whole-house water filter included in the plumbing scope. We can coordinate with your existing trades or handle the supply and installation ourselves. Several of our customers have added filtration during kitchen and bathroom renovations across Tarneit, Point Cook, Werribee, Doncaster, and Ringwood.
What Is Included in Our $1,100 Installed Price?
We get asked this a lot, so here is exactly what the $1,100 fully installed price covers:
Included | Not Included (Quoted Separately If Needed) |
ā HP3 3-Stage Filtration System (304 stainless steel) | Additional plumbing work if main line access is obstructed ($150 to $500, depending on scope) |
ā All three filter cartridges (sediment + carbon block + 0.5µm composite) | Pipe upgrades for severely degraded plumbing (rare, quoted on assessment) |
ā Stainless steel wall-mount bracket | Under sink RO system (separate product, from $1,100 installed)Ā |
ā Isolation valves (inlet and outlet) | Replacement cartridges after initial set (~$350/set, typically every 12 to 18 months, DIY swap) |
ā All fittings, connections, and thread tape | Extended pipe run if filter needs to be mounted more than 3 metres from the main water entry ($80 to $200) |
ā Licensed plumber labour (2 to 3 hours) | Weatherproof housing if no suitable covered mounting location is available ($100 to $250) |
ā Full system testing (pressure, flow, leaks) | Relocation of water meter or main shut-off valve (council/water authority responsibility) |
ā Handover and cartridge replacement training | Repair of pre-existing plumbing issues unrelated to the filter (e.g. leaking taps, corroded pipes elsewhere in the home) |
Everything in the left column is included in your $1,100. Items in the right column are uncommon. The vast majority of Melbourne installations require nothing beyond the standard price. If any additional work is needed, it is identified during the assessment (Step 1) and priced transparently before we begin.

Do I Need a Licensed Plumber? (Yes, and Here Is Why)
Any work that involves cutting into, connecting to, or modifying your main water supply must be carried out by a licensed plumber. This is not optional. Beyond the legal requirement, there are practical reasons professional installation matters:
- Incorrect installation can cause leaks, water damage, or contamination of your water supply
- Using sealant instead of thread tape (a common DIY error) can crack filter housings and create slow leaks that go unnoticed until damage occurs
- Reversed water flow through cartridges makes the entire system ineffective. You would be drinking unfiltered water without knowing it.
- Insurance may not cover water damage from unlicensed plumbing work
- Product warranties can be voided by improper installation
With Select Plumbing and Gas, installation is included in the system price. You are not buying the product from one supplier and then finding a separate plumber. We handle everything. Single point of accountability, fully compliant with Australian plumbing standards.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will my water be off during installation?
Approximately 60 to 90 minutes during the core installation phase (Step 2). We recommend filling a kettle or some water bottles beforehand. Water is restored as soon as the connections are made and pressure-tested.
Where exactly is the system installed?
The HP3 is wall-mounted near your main water entry point, typically on an external wall near the garage, laundry, or side of the house. It needs to be accessible for filter changes and protected from direct weather. Your plumber confirms the best spot during the assessment.
Will the filter reduce my water pressure?
No. The HP3 is designed to handle standard Melbourne mains pressure without noticeable flow reduction. We test every tap in your home after installation to confirm proper pressure. If there is any pre-existing pressure issue, the plumber will identify it during the assessment
Can I install a whole-house water filter myself?
In Victoria, modifying your main water supply requires a licensed plumber. Beyond the legal requirement, DIY installation risks leaks, incorrect connections, and voided product warranties. Our installed price includes all labour, so there is no cost advantage to doing it yourself.
Can I add an under-sink reverse osmosis system at the same time?
Absolutely. Many of our customers install both a whole-house filter and an under-sink RO system in the same visit. The combined installation takes around 3 to 4 hours, and the combined installed price starts from $2,200 with 0% finance available. For more on when the dual setup makes sense
What if my plumbing needs additional work?
If your plumber identifies extra work during the assessment (such as pipe rerouting, replacing degraded fittings, or accessing a difficult main line location), they will explain what is needed and give you a clear price before starting. You will never be hit with an unexpected charge.
