Here’s the reassuring part and the important part in one sentence: your system isn’t malfunctioning when it shuts down – a safety device is deliberately switching it off to protect you. That device is doing exactly what it was designed to do. What’s Actually Shutting It Down
Every storage hot water system has a safety device called an ECO – an energy cut-out, sometimes called a high-limit or thermal cut-out switch. Its single job is to watch the water temperature and, if it climbs past a safe limit (around 85–90°C), instantly cut power or gas to the unit before the water gets dangerously hot.
A healthy system never reaches that temperature, because the thermostat switches the heat off long before – usually at around 60°C. So the ECO should, in normal life, never trip at all.
Which means the logic is simple: if your ECO is tripping, the thermostat has stopped doing its job, or something is making the water heat far more than it should. The ECO is the backstop catching a failure further up the chain. Find that failure, and the shutdowns stop.

Is It Electric or Gas? The Cause Differs
The overheating symptom looks the same from the shower, but what’s behind it depends on your system type.

Why It Tends to Happen in Winter
If your system started tripping as the cold set in, that’s not a coincidence. A Melbourne winter is exactly when a marginal thermostat or a scaled element finally gives up:
- Colder inlet water – Mains water arrives 10–12°C colder than in summer, so the element or burner runs much longer and harder to reach temperature. A thermostat that was barely coping in autumn fails under that extra load.
- More heating cycles – Higher winter demand means the unit cycles on and off far more often, and every cycle is a test the failing component eventually loses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it dangerous if my hot water keeps overheating?
The overheating itself is being contained – that’s what the safety cut-out is for, and while it’s working, you’re protected. The risk comes from overriding it. Repeatedly resetting the cut-out to force the system back on defeats the very device stopping the water from becoming scalding. Get the underlying fault fixed rather than resetting around it.
Why does resetting it only work for a while?
Because resetting the cut-out doesn’t repair anything – it just clears the trip. The failed thermostat, degraded ECO or scaled element is still there, so the water overheats again and the cut-out does its job again. The reset treats the symptom, not the cause.
Can I replace the thermostat myself?
We’d strongly advise against it. On an electric unit you’re working around 240V and a pressurised hot water tank; on a gas unit you’re into gas controls. The diagnosis also matters – fitting a new thermostat when the real fault is a scaled element just wastes the part.

Does this happen to continuous flow systems too?
Not in the same way. Continuous flow units don’t store heated water, so they don’t trip a tank cut-out. Instead, they detect an over-temperature condition and display an error code, then stop. The cause is different and so is the fix – check the code and have it diagnosed.
