Blocked Drains

If two or more fixtures are backing up, gurgling or draining slowly at the same time, the blockage is not in any of them. It is in the drain they share. One blocked sink is a sink problem. A sink, a shower and a toilet misbehaving together is a main line problem, and the difference matters because nothing you do to an individual fixture will fix it.

The same goes for an outdoor gully overflowing in the yard. That is not a separate fault. It is the clearest signal there is that the main drain is blocked, and it is worth understanding why before you do anything else.

Stop Using Water in the House

No toilets, no showers, no washing machine, no dishwasher. Everything you send down has to go somewhere, and with the main line blocked, it comes back up at the lowest opening. Every additional litre increases the chance that it is inside the house rather than outside it.

How to Tell It’s the Main Line, Not One Fixture

The pattern tells you almost everything. Run through this before assuming it is the drain you can see.

What You’re Seeing What It Means
Flushing the toilet makes the shower gurgle or rise Water leaving the toilet cannot get away, so it is pushing air back through the nearest shared opening. The blockage is downstream of both
Running the washing machine backs up the laundry trough or a floor waste A pump discharging at volume finds the restriction faster than a tap does. Often the first symptom anyone notices
The outdoor gully is overflowing The main drain is blocked, and the system is discharging outside on purpose. See the next section.
Only one fixture is affected, and everything else is normal Not a main line problem. The blockage is in that fixture’s own trap or branch pipe
Sewage is coming up inside, through a shower or floor waste A blocked main line with no working outside relief point, or one that has been built over. Treat as urgent

That last row is the one that cannot wait. If anything has come up inside the house, stop using water entirely and read raw sewage coming up through the shower, which covers the health side properly.

Why the Outdoor Gully Overflowing Is Actually Good News

The grated drain sitting at ground level outside, usually near the bathroom or laundry wall, is an overflow relief gully. It is a deliberate weak point in the system.

Its grate sits lower than the lowest fixture inside the house. So when the main drain blocks and the level rises, the gully is the first place the water reaches, and it discharges into the yard rather than into your bathroom. It is not a fault. It is the one part of the drainage system whose entire job is to fail first, outside, where the damage is a wet garden bed instead of ruined flooring.

Which is why sewage appearing inside the house is a more serious situation than a gully overflowing outside. It usually means the gully has been built over, paved across, raised during landscaping, or its grate has been sealed. If your gully is buried under decking or pavers, that is worth fixing before the next blockage rather than after it.

What Actually Blocks a Main Drain

A main line is wider than a fixture branch and carries everything the house produces, so it does not block for trivial reasons. There are four usual culprits.

  • Tree roots. The most common cause across established Melbourne suburbs. Roots find the moisture at a joint or a hairline crack, enter as fine hairs, then thicken into a mass that catches everything passing. If you have mature trees anywhere near the drain run, this is the first suspect. Our guide to the best and worst trees to plant near a house covers which species cause the most trouble.
  • A collapsed or misaligned section of pipe. Older inner-suburban homes still run on earthenware, laid in short lengths with joints every metre or so. Ground movement, a heavy vehicle over a driveway, or decades of root pressure can drop a section out of line. Once that happens, the pipe catches solids at the step and blocks repeatedly, no matter how often it is cleared.
  • Accumulated fat and solids. Kitchen fat that solidifies in a cold pipe builds a coating that narrows the line over years, and it grabs everything fibrous that goes past. Rarely the sole cause in a main line, frequently the reason a partial restriction became a complete one.
  • Wipes and non-flushables. Wipes labelled flushable do not break down. In a fixture branch, they cause an obvious single blockage. In a main line, they bind onto a root mass or a rough joint and turn something manageable into something solid.

Worth separating two systems that get confused constantly. Your sewer drain carries waste from toilets, showers, sinks and the laundry. Your stormwater drain carries rainwater from the roof and the yard, on a completely separate network. A flooded backyard after rain with no sewage smell is a stormwater problem, not this one, and the rules about who is responsible are different too.

Is It Your Drain or the Water Corporation’s?

This is where a main line blockage differs from every other plumbing problem in the house, because the pipe may not be entirely yours.

As a general rule in Melbourne, you own and maintain the drain from inside your home out to the point where it connects to the water corporation’s sewer. Yarra Valley Water refers to that connection as a 27A, and it usually sits at or near the property boundary. Everything on your side of it, including the inspection shaft and the boundary trap, is yours. Everything beyond it belongs to the corporation. Which corporation depends on where you live: Yarra Valley Water, South East Water and Greater Western Water each cover different parts of Melbourne.

Two situations are worth knowing about before you call anyone.

  • If the blockage is on their side, it is their cost. Corporations generally clear blockages in their own infrastructure at no charge, and some will reimburse a plumber’s callout that established the blockage was theirs. The two sides are often only metres apart, which is exactly why a camera that pinpoints the location is what settles who pays.
  • Shared drains are private, and the cost is shared. A combined drain collects waste from several properties and discharges through a single connection. These are common in older inner-north streets, terraces and subdivided blocks around Brunswick, Fitzroy and Northcote. A combined drain belongs to all the properties on it, so a fault in a shared section is a shared expense rather than one owner’s problem. Neighbours are often unaware they are on one until it blocks.

Because the line sits close to the boundary and the rules vary slightly between retailers, confirm your own position with your water corporation before authorising any excavation. A camera inspection first gives you the evidence to do that with. If you are renting, the responsibility question is a different one again, and we set that out in tenant or landlord responsible for clogged drains.

What a Plumber Actually Does About a Blocked Main

A main line blockage is not cleared by working on a fixture, which is what separates it from ordinary blocked drain work. Access comes through the inspection shaft near the boundary, or through the gully.

  1. Locate the access point and confirm the pattern. Which fixtures are affected tells us roughly how far along the line the restriction sits before anything goes down the pipe.
  2. Clear it. A drain machine cuts through a root mass. High-pressure water jetting scours the full internal wall rather than punching a channel through the middle, which is the difference between the line flowing again for months and flowing again for years.
  3. Camera the line. On a main drain, this is not optional. It confirms the blockage is gone, shows what caused it, marks the depth and distance, and establishes which side of the connection point the fault sits on. That is the evidence you need for a corporation claim or a shared-drain conversation. A CCTV inspection is what turns a recurring problem into a solvable one.
  4. Fix the pipe if the pipe is the problem. Where roots are entering through a crack or a section has dropped, clearing it is temporary by definition. Pipe relining rebuilds the damaged section internally without digging up the yard or the driveway.

What Determines the Cost of Clearing a Main Drain

There is no single price, and any figure quoted before someone has looked inside the pipe is guesswork. Four things decide it.

  • What is in there. Soft build-up clears quickly. A hardened root mass needs cutting and jetting, and takes considerably longer.
  • How far along the line it sits. A blockage near the inspection shaft is straightforward. One well out toward the boundary takes longer to reach.
  • Whether the access point is usable. An inspection shaft that has been paved over, built on or landscaped across has to be found and exposed before any work starts.
  • Whether the pipe itself has failed. Clearing restores flow. Relining rebuilds the pipe. Those are two different scopes of work, and only a camera tells you which one you are actually buying.

We inspect before quoting and give you a fixed price in writing for the agreed work. Our guide to what it costs to unblock a drain in Melbourne explains how to compare quotes properly, including the call-out fee question.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it is the main drain or just one fixture?

Count the fixtures. If only one is affected and everything else drains normally, the blockage is in that fixture’s own trap or branch. If two or more are gurgling, backing up or draining slowly together, or if flushing the toilet affects the shower, the blockage is in the line they share.

Why is my outdoor drain overflowing but the toilet still flushes?

Because the gully is doing its job. Its grate sits lower than every fixture inside, so it relieves first when the main line backs up. The toilet still flushes because the water has somewhere to go, which is out through the gully rather than up through your floor. It still means the main drain is blocked and still needs clearing.

Can I use a drain cleaner on a main drain blockage?

No. Caustic drain cleaners are made for soft build-up in a fixture waste. They will not touch a root mass or a collapsed pipe, and pouring them into a line that is already full means a plumber then has to work in caustic water. It adds cost and risk without improving anything.

Will the water corporation clear it for free?

Only if the blockage is in their infrastructure, beyond your connection point. On your side of that point, it is yours. Because the two sides can be only metres apart, a camera inspection that pinpoints the location is usually what determines who pays, and some corporations will reimburse the plumber’s callout if the fault turns out to be theirs.

My neighbour’s drain is blocked too. What does that mean?

Very likely a shared or combined drain, which is a private pipe serving several properties through one connection. They are common in older inner-suburban streets and subdivided blocks. If the fault is in the shared section, the cost is shared between the owners on it rather than falling on whoever noticed first.

Is a blocked main drain an emergency?

It is if sewage is coming up inside the house, if the only toilet is unusable, or if waste is pooling where children or pets can reach it. If it is contained to an outdoor gully and you can stop using water, it can usually wait for a normal booking, though not for long. A partial blockage becomes a complete one.

Why does my main drain keep blocking every few months?

Because it is being cleared rather than fixed. A line that re-blocks on a predictable cycle almost always has roots entering through a crack or a section that has dropped out of alignment, and each clear buys a few months until the same mass rebuilds. A camera shows which it is, and relining the damaged section is what actually ends it.
